Gold and silver Words by Kate Marcelin-Rice For the full text of this article see The Mediterranean Garden No 57, July 2009 "Then there are the santolinas. Their flowers are often indisputably yellow – although we also grow Santolina benthamiana (with grey foliage and cream-coloured flowers) and S. viridis ‘Primrose Gem’ (with green foliage and soft ivory-yellow flowers) – but their small button-like shape somehow makes them less aggressive." "At one corner grows a large broom (Spartium junceum). I love it for its sweet scent but why, oh why, were pink oleanders planted near it rather than white ones? At least the broom has a short flowering season and is usually over before the oleanders get into full swing. To make matters worse, though, there is a dense triangular wedge of St John’s Wort (Hypericum calycinum) all along one side of the pool ." |
