The Runway
by Peter Dinning
photographs by Peter Dinning

Photographs to illustrate the article published in The Mediterranean Garden No 83, January 2016.

Having a service road cutting through the garden is never ideal, but if you are on-hand during the planning stage then provision can be made the soften the effect with suitable plantings. The growing conditions in the area Peter Dinning describes were a challenging mix of a steep slope, hot sun (south-facing) and poor soil (thin layer of alkaline clay over limestone bedrock). Yet with a judicious choice of tough low-growing groundcover plants Peter has succeeded in creating something pleasing to the eye and practical.

The choice of plants:

Drosanthemum sp.

Stachys citrina

Drosanthemum sp. and Stachys citrina

Delosperma cooperi and Campanula portenschlagiana
