John Jefferis – TMG Artist for All Occasions: by Fleur Pavlidis More drawings by John Jefferis to add to those reprinted in The Mediterranean Garden No 86, October 2016. In TMG No 19, Winter 2000, Marion Abrams described the mediterranean garden she had created in Christchurch, New Zealand. The drawing by John shows the result – cypresses, agaves, echium and cordylines.
In 2002 a new drought-tolerant garden was opened at Geelong Botanic Gardens and Jayne Salmond wrote about it in TMG no 37, July 2004. John’s drawing shows a Dracaena draco, obviously planted as a mature tree, being supported until it can root itself in.
In TMG No 70, October 2016, Jan Flanigan described a number of Australian gardens. John’s drawing of the Lixouri garden is reprinted in TMG No 86. This is his drawing of another garden called Minilya.
Kirsten Honeyman wrote about La Carmejane, an historic estate in the Luberon region of France, in TMG No 75, January 2014, and John produced three lovely drawings from her photographs. This one was the frontispiece of that issue of the journal showing the entrance courtyard.
The gardens of Pompeii have featured more than once in TMG. Back in 2002 (TMG No 29) Dr Gian Lupo Osti wrote a follow-up article in response to a previous article in TMG No 18. John illustrated it with a drawing of a courtyard garden.
This spectacular specimen of Ficus macrophylla grows at the Villa Whitaker in Sicily. John drew from the photograph taken by Marcello Cascino to illustrate his article in TMG No 21, July 2000.
David Bracey visited Sicily on one of his travels and wrote about the street trees for TMG No 36, April 2004. John drew the clipped Ficus retusa in front of an interesting building.
Another article by David Bracey on the Botanic Gardens of Caixa Gerona, Spain, published in TMG No 47, January 2007, was illustrated by John with a drawing of Strelitzia reginae.
A personal story of making a succulent-cactus garden in southern Greece was told by Kornelia Roggatz in TMG No 28, April 2002, and illustrated by John using one of her photographs.
