A small mystery solved by our experts

While in Oman a couple of years ago, Jan Thompson picked some dried flowers from the side of the road, managed to find seeds inside and this year got them to germinate. She now has four plants around 60 cms tall, branched with many flower heads. Here are the pictures she sent:

David Bracey submitted her request to one of our experts, and here is the answer:
“I am sure your plant is a Safflower or False Saffron: Carthamus tinctorius. It has a cultivar similar to this called, I believe, ‘Orange Sun’.”
